Dr. Murphy is a native of the Pittsburgh area, an alum of North Allegheny High School. He attended the University of Virginia, earning a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. He was initially keen on a career in chemical industry, but realized he loved working with people, and decided to pursue medicine to blend his love for science, education, and supporting others. Prior to medical school, he worked for one year as a medical assistant at a local opioid use recovery clinic--a formative experience that opened his eyes to the many medical and socioeconomic challenges facing his hometown. He attended Pitt Medical School and completed his residency in Internal Medicine here at UPMC. While a resident at UPMC, he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and was also chosen as the recipient of numerous awards including: - The American College of Physicians Exemplar of Professionalism Award- The Dr. Frank M. Mateer award--an award chosen by a vote of all current IM residents who are asked to consider which senior resident they would most want to care for their own family members. - The Little Apple Gold Humanism Award for excellence in medical student education - VA Star Award for outstanding service to Veterans and their families In his spare time, he loves traveling with his wife, taking his 3 nephews to the zoo, managing multiple fantasy football teams, and playing outdoor volleyball with friends.
