The teens and young adults I see every day as an adolescent medicine specialist are inspiring, caring, curious, energized, and complicated, and my passion for this field stems from my experiences working with these incredible individuals. I am committed to ensuring that my patients have equitable access to quality care and feel safe, heard, and empowered to make healthy choices.I treat children of all ages, but specialize in the years between 10 and 25. My areas of interest include preventive medicine, emotional health, positive youth development, advocacy, and reproductive health for all individuals. I recognize that social context and stress play important roles in how someone is feeling and acting and I will spend the necessary time learning how to best serve each patient. My research focuses on education for different types of learners. I have helped update and develop more inclusive and comprehensive reproductive health content for medical school and residency programs. Most recently, I created a curriculum for fraternity members about consent and sexual assault in an effort to change attitudes and behaviors. For five years, I taught a graduate student course at Widener University’s Center for Human Sexuality Studies, focusing on biological foundations while questioning biases, evaluating how to frame language when providing care, and discussing the critical interdisciplinary roles that are factored into a person’s wellbeing. All of my experiences impact the way I interact with my patients and their families and prompt me to apply a more holistic and individualized approach every single day. From an early age I knew that I wanted a profession that involved caring for children. I am very fortunate to have found that as a pediatric gastroenterologist. Children never cease to amaze me in their creativity, energy, and resiliency. I especially love developing long term relationships with these children and their families.Patients come to me for a variety of gastrointestinal and nutritional issues. These include celiac disease, reflux, abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation, and diarrhea. When needed, I also perform endoscopies and colonoscopies to help diagnose and manage these conditions.I am fortunate to be a part of the remarkable team at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. The center provides excellent care to children and adults with celiac disease, an autoimmune disease that results in damage to the small intestine when gluten is ingested. The only treatment for celiac disease is a lifelong gluten free diet. With a team composed of physicians, registered dieticians, pathologists, and researchers, we are dedicated to delivering comprehensive and compassionate care to patients and their families. Celiac disease is a condition near and dear to me, having been diagnosed myself as an adult. I feel very strongly that it’s important while treating celiac disease to ensure that my patients are not only healthy but happy.I also spend time on celiac disease-based research and educational programming. I have a particular interest in the impact of celiac disease on our patients and their families. I am also involved in the training of future pediatric gastroenterologists at Columbia University. Dr. Jossen is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Celiac Disease. Her top areas of expertise are Celiac Disease, Malabsorption, Colitis, Viral Gastroenteritis, and Liver Transplant.

Dr. Freedberg graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency and fellowship training at Columbia University. He received a Master's degree in biostatistics from Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Freedberg's research focuses on the use of acid suppression medications, Clostridium difficile infection, and the gastrointestinal microbiome. Current projects include studies of how acid suppression medications alter the colonic microbiome and of how alterations in the gastrointestinal flora predispose patients to Clostridium difficile and other infections during periods of critical illness. His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Gastroenterological Association.Dr. Freedberg is a clinical and translational investigator focused on the relationship between the gastrointestinal microbiome and infections, both enteric and non-enteric. He is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and the Mailman School of Public Health and trained in medicine and gastroenterology at Columbia University Medical Center. He is the past recipient of an American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Research Scholar Award and has received funding from the NIH/NIDDK, Irving Institute (Columbia's CTSA), and the Department of Defense. His work has been published in leading journals across disciplines: Gastroenterology, Clinical Infectious Disease, Intensive Care Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Nature. Currently, he focuses on the gastrointestinal microbiome in the intensive care unit (ICU). He has built large ICU cohorts containing longitudinal clinical data, serial rectal swabs, other biosamples, and clinical outcomes data. These samples and data have been collected to understand the dynamic changes that take place within the gastrointestinal microbiome during critical illness and to ask how these changes may impact risk for ICU-acquired infections. His past studies in this area show the importance of colonizing pathogens such as C. difficile and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) as determinants not only of the patient's own health but of outcomes for patients who share the same hospital environment. Ongoing research tests interventions seeking to improve the resistance of the native gut microbiota against pathogens, with a goal of preventing colonization and downstream infection in the ICU. Dr. Freedberg is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Celiac Disease. His top areas of expertise are Pseudomembranous Colitis, Lower Esophageal Ring, Barrett Esophagus, Endoscopy, and Colonoscopy.

As a child, whenever I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always the same: a pediatrician. My love for gastroenterology developed later, during the first year of my pediatric residency. I was inspired by a very difficult case and the gastroenterologist who helped me solve it. I also developed a special interest in nutrition, which is so important for all children, especially when they are sick.I treat children with a variety of GI problems, including inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome, esophageal reflux, and failure to thrive. I have special expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of celiac disease—a disease treated solely with diet. I am one of the first pediatric gastroenterologists to become part of Columbia's Celiac Center, which brings together physicians and scientists to integrate patient care, education, and research involving this disease.I played an integral part in developing the pediatric nutrition support service at Babies Hospital—now called NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. We provide specialized nutrition services, like parental nutrition, tochildren with acute or chronic illnesses that prevent them from using their gut for nutrition. This service has grown exponentially over the years.I have also been involved in liver, celiac, and IBD research and I have served on the Data Safety Monitoring Board for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I am a member of several national committees involved in celiac disease research and policy. Dr. Defelice is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Celiac Disease. I am privileged to have achieved my lifelong goal of becoming a pediatric gastroenterologist, more specifically a pediatric neurogastroenterologist. I have a special interest and expertise in disorders of the gut-brain interaction, including motility disorders, which involve the movement of food through the GI tract, and functional disorders, which involve interactions between the brain and GI tract that affect motility. These conditions can be debilitating and yet they remain challenging to treat effectively. My team and I evaluate and treat children and adolescents using advanced, state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic techniques with multidisciplinary approach. Some of the conditions we treat are dysphagia, achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic nausea, gastroparesis, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic abdominal pain, severe constipation, fecal incontinence, and anorectal disorders. We think of our patients and their problems holistically and take pride in developing personal connections with patients and their families. My goal is to deliver compassionate, respectful, evidence-based, and humanistic care to children with gastrointestinal diseases.I co-direct many multidisciplinary clinics, including the Gastrointestinal Motility Center, Esophageal Atresia Clinic, Aerodigestive Program, and Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Program, and I work closely with pediatric surgeons, pulmonologists, cardiologists, ear nose throat (ENT) specialists, psychologists, and language pathologists to provide the most comprehensive care to children with complex GI medical conditions.I also take great pride in educating medical students, residents, fellows, and other providers. I have mentored several GI fellows who have joined other institutions across the county and are currently working to establish multidisciplinary clinics and expand access to care for functional and motility disorders. In addition to my clinical and education roles, my team and I conduct multiple clinical research projects focusing on functional and motility disorders. I work on clinical trials which allow our patients to have access to therapeutics that are not otherwise offered to children. This work has led to numerous presentations at national meetings and publications in high impact gastroenterology journals—all with the mission of improving children’s health and advancing the science of gastrointestinal motility and functional gastrointestinal diseases. Dr. Khlevner is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Celiac Disease. Her top areas of expertise are Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC), Tracheoesophageal Fistula, Esophageal Atresia, Gastrostomy, and Endoscopy.

What is the definition of Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is a condition in which the immune system is abnormally sensitive to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder; autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system malfunctions and attacks the body's own tissues and organs. Without a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet, inflammation resulting from immune system overactivity may cause a wide variety of signs and symptoms involving many parts of the body.

When should I see a Celiac Disease doctor near Bronx, NY?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Celiac Disease doctor near Bronx, NY?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Celiac Disease doctors near Bronx, NY?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Celiac Disease doctors near Bronx, NY?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Celiac Disease doctor near Bronx, NY?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Celiac Disease doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Celiac Disease doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Celiac Disease doctor near Bronx, NY?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Celiac Disease doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Celiac Disease doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.
