What is the definition of Eosinophilic Asthma?

Eosinophilic asthma is a form of severe asthma that mainly occurs in adults. Asthma is a chronic condition that causes the airways of the lungs to spasm as they constrict, swell, and produce excess mucous. Eosinophilic asthma is characterized by a high level of eosinophils, which are a type of white blood cells that fight infection. While the cause is unknown, the high number of eosinophils may occur on their own or be caused by an allergic reaction, a drug reaction, or a parasitic disease. The eosinophils create inflammation in the airways that triggers asthma symptoms.

What are the symptoms of Eosinophilic Asthma?

Symptoms of eosinophilic asthma may be severe and persistent and include shortness of breath and/or difficulty breathing, coughing, wheezing, constriction of the airways, and chest tightness. Individuals with eosinophilic asthma also often have chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps.
