A memorable experience in the jungles of Nicaragua as a new college graduate and student missionary opened Dr. Jeremy Meyer’s eyes to the importance of the surgery skills he uses today. “I saw how much medical help was needed,” he recalled. “Machetes are used a lot for clearing the jungle, and a guy came in with a machete cut down to the bone. I remember helping clean and suture that, and I saw how surgery was a good fit for doing medical work in developing countries. “I desire to do more of that, so this was the big draw to go into surgery.” When he returned from missionary work, Dr. Meyer left Tennessee to attend medical school at Loma Linda University in California. After graduation, he was pleased to be accepted for a surgery residency at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine, his top choice. Now, as a general surgeon at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton, Dr. Meyer loves the satisfaction of operating on patients and fixing their problems. “I am meeting my patients at a vulnerable time, so it’s easier to develop a deep relationship with them in a short time,” he said – and listening is an important part of that. “You have to allow patients time to talk, because you can pick up on things you have in common and make them feel more at ease,” he explained. “I also like to stop and ask if they have any questions when I’m explaining; I don’t just assume they understand. Some want all the details, and some just want an overview.” When he’s not doing surgery, Dr. Meyer, his wife and his children enjoy simple activities like walking in the neighborhood, camping in the fall and hiking. “Northeast Tennessee is an awesome place for trails and waterfalls,” he said. It is here that he first learned to play violin while growing up in Jonesborough, and it’s not uncommon to find him using that musical talent at his church today. Living close to his parents makes it easy for Dr. Meyer and his dad to continue their shared hobbies of mountain climbing and flying together, since both have their pilot’s license. Adventures and school have taken him around the world, but he’s happy to be home again. He’ll go on more foreign medical mission trips, but Northeast Tennessee is home. “I always wanted to come back,” he said. Dr. Meyer is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ogilvie Syndrome. His top areas of expertise are Gallstones, Choledocholithiasis, Gallbladder Disease, Gastrostomy, and Endoscopy.

I grew up in North Carolina and went to college in Chattanooga, Tenn. After I completed my undergraduate degree, I moved to Johnson City and received my medical degree from Quillen College of Medicine where I also completed my residency and laboratory fellowship. My husband and I love this area and are still here after 19 years. We enjoy outdoor activities such as biking and waterskiing. The small town atmosphere of Northeast Tennessee has proven to be a safe and active place to raise our kids. For as long as I can remember I wanted to be a doctor. I’ve had many mentors throughout my residency, but my greatest mentor is my father, who is also a surgeon. In medical school, I tried other specialties, but I realized there just wasn’t any specialty I enjoyed more than surgery. Meeting new and interesting people along with the professional interaction with my colleagues are some of the things I enjoy most about being a surgeon. My personal philosophy for treating patients is that physicians were put on earth to serve others. I believe God created us to be His hands and feet, which is a great privilege and responsibility. I listen closely to my patients because I find that they often will tell me their diagnosis before I even ask. My husband, Mark, is in long-term care administration. We have been married for 19 years and have three children, Abbie, Andrew, and Megan who are all in elementary school and keep us constantly busy. One of my favorite hobbies is playing racquetball. I also enjoy biking, waterskiing, reading and baking with my oldest daughter. I am involved in the children's ministries at my church, and I serve on the school board at Living Springs Christian Academy in Gray, TN. Dr. Defluiter is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ogilvie Syndrome. Her top areas of expertise are Breast Cancer, Paget Disease of the Breast, Angiosarcoma, Endoscopy, and Gastrectomy.

What is the definition of Ogilvie Syndrome?

Ogilvie syndrome is a rare condition that affects the large intestines (colon). Although the signs and symptoms mimic those of an intestinal blockage, there is no physical obstruction. Instead, the symptoms are due to nerve or muscle problems that affect peristalsis (the involuntary, rhythmic muscular contractions that move food, fluid, and air through the intestines). In people affected by Ogilvie syndrome, the symptoms come on suddenly and may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention (swelling), constipation, and/or diarrhea. The underlying cause of Ogilvie syndrome is poorly understood. However, it usually occurs in adults when the colon becomes enlarged after surgery, illness or injury.

When should I see an Ogilvie Syndrome doctor in Tennessee, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Ogilvie Syndrome doctor in Tennessee, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Ogilvie Syndrome doctors in Tennessee, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Ogilvie Syndrome doctors in Tennessee, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Ogilvie Syndrome doctor in Tennessee, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Ogilvie Syndrome doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Ogilvie Syndrome doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Ogilvie Syndrome doctor in Tennessee, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Ogilvie Syndrome doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Ogilvie Syndrome doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Ogilvie Syndrome doctors in Tennessee, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Ogilvie Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Ogilvie Syndrome doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Ogilvie Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
