"Brittany Bankhead, M.D., recently joined the Department of Surgery as an associate professor. Dr. Bankhead is a double-board certified trauma and general surgeon and a surgical intensivist. Before joining MUSC, she was an assistant professor of surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC). This fall, she was awarded the President's Innovation Award at TTUHSC and the prestigious ""40 under 40"" award by the Association of Women Surgeons.During her time as the Stop the Bleed State Champion of Texas for the Committee on Trauma, she saw a need for improved hemorrhage control training. She built a multidisciplinary regional team that was accepted into the National Science Foundation's Innovation Corps (NSF I-Corps), an immersive, entrepreneurial training program. During this prestigious program, Dr. Bankhead's team shifted their focus for commercialization from solely local injury prevention to also include improved military biofeedback hemorrhage control training. Dr. Bankhead's team received regional and national funding, including a $50,000 grant for the NSF iCorps award. She most recently was selected, among a large national cohort, to present her medical technology in Washington, DC, at a multidisciplinary innovation conference with large military and federal influence. This has given her the ability to continue to work towards her future goals of large-scale NIH federal innovation funding and commercialization with a military focus. Dr. Bankhead is looking forward to multidisciplinary collaboration and helping grow the network of research and commercialization opportunities at MUSC.During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Bankhead was part of the inaugural international group ""CovidSurg"" through the National Institute for Health Research Unit on Global Surgery in the United Kingdom. Her experiences and insights from the frontline were shared in multiple national outlets, including The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, and the New Yorker.Dr. Bankhead is passionate about ensuring healthcare workers feel an open door to discussing hardships \& trials concomitantly with their pursuit of excellent patient care. She served as a panelist at the inaugural ""Surgeons as Second Victims"" lecture at the American College of Surgeons annual meeting and helped create the roundtable ""Finding Comfort in Discomfort... Reflecting on Stories Told"" at the 2022 American Association for Academic Surgery presidential session. She is equally passionate about ensuring females feel an open door to starting and maintaining a productive career in surgery.Dr. Bankhead's leadership extends beyond her clinical practice. Dr. Aaron Cunningham is a board-eligible pediatric surgeon in Charleston, South Carolina who maintains a comprehensive practice in pediatric general and thoracic surgery including the surgical care of neonates, pediatric surgical oncology, and minimally invasive surgery in children with congenital anomalies such as congenital pulmonary airway malformations (CPAM), esophageal atresia (EA/TEF), diaphragmatic hernia or a rare hepatobiliary disorder known as biliary atresia. He was trained with a highly-specialized focus in minimally invasive techniques for small neonates and believes in the comprehensive, multidisciplinary care of children with the goal of improving health over the course of a lifetime. Dr. Cunningham's treatment philosophy is to deliver the specific care that each individual child needs to allow them to live better over the course of their lifetime, as he would for his own family. With the state-of-the-art facilities available at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, he is dedicated to providing care, specific to children, that cannot be delivered anywhere else in South Carolina and beyond.Dr. Cunningham was born and grew up in New York where he studied biological engineering at Cornell University. He developed an interest in medicine while working as a clinical neurophysiologist in Georgia and went on to attend medical school there at the Medical College of Georgia. Surgical residency brought him to the west coast where he trained at Oregon Health \& Science University in Portland. During his time there he developed an acute interest in pediatric surgery and completed a research fellowship in pediatric surgical outcomes. His research time was productive and predominantly focused on trauma induced coagulopathy in children and systems approaches to improving pediatric surgical care. Dr. Cunningham then completed his fellowship training in pediatric surgery at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University. The highly-specialized training that he received while at Stanford predominantly focused on minimally invasive surgical techniques in small neonates including minimally invasive approaches to esophageal atresia, CPAM, diaphragmatic hernia, and an advanced endosurgical technique called peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), which was performed on children in only one other center in the country.Dr. Cunningham joins MUSC as an assistant professor of surgery in 2023. He is passionate about the care of all children but maintains a clinical focus in a rare hepatobiliary disorder known as biliary atresia where the bile ducts form abnormally. He believes that complex diseases, like biliary atresia, are best managed in places where coordinated multidisciplinary care can be offered, like the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. His research interests include biliary atresia, pediatric trauma and defining systematic barriers to improving pediatric surgical care through quality improvement. Dr. Cunningham is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in Splenectomy. His clinical expertise encompasses Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), Atresia of Small Intestine, Short Bowel Syndrome, Gastrostomy, and Splenectomy. Dr. Cunningham is currently accepting new patients.

When should I see an Splenectomy doctor in South Carolina, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Splenectomy doctor in South Carolina, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Splenectomy doctors in South Carolina, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Splenectomy doctors in South Carolina, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Splenectomy doctor in South Carolina, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Splenectomy doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Splenectomy doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Splenectomy doctor in South Carolina, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Splenectomy doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Splenectomy doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Splenectomy doctors in South Carolina, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Splenectomy doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Splenectomy doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Splenectomy doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
