Dr. Evonne Morell
Overview
Evonne M. Morell, DO, is director of Inpatient General Pediatric Cardiology Services and director of Quality Improvement for General Cardiology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She is also an assistant professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. Dr. Morell earned her medical degree from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed a pediatric residency via the Fast-Track Program at Michigan State University, followed by a pediatric cardiology fellowship at UPMC Children’s Hospital. She served as chief pediatric cardiology fellow in her final year of this fellowship program. She then furthered her training through a one-year Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care fellowship at UPMC Children’s. Dr. Morell’s career has focused on acute care cardiology and complex congenital heart diseases including single-ventricle physiology. Since her appointment as an assistant professor of Pediatrics in 2011, Dr. Morell has transformed the inpatient general cardiology service at Children’s. She sought advanced training in quality improvement methodology, helped to develop a general cardiology quality improvement program at Children’s, and established herself as a local and national leader in quality improvement. Her current research focus is on quality improvement with projects focused on improving patient care in the acute care and outpatient settings. She is a member of the American Heart Association, the Pennsylvania Chapter of Osteopathic Physicians-District VIII, the Pediatric Acute Cardiology Care Collaborative, and the PAC3 Quality Improvement Subcommittee, as well as an executive member of the Pediatric Acute Cardiology Care Collaborative. Laura Jean Olivieri, MD, is a board-certified Pediatric Cardiologist and the Director of Noninvasive Cardiac Imaging at Children's Hospital Pittsburgh, and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at University of Pittsburgh. She graduated from University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Brown University in Providence, RI, where she also was invited to stay for a chief year. She completed her training in pediatric cardiology at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC following by a year in advanced cardiac imaging at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute specializing in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging. She is expert in transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT. She is also considered a leader in the field of 3-dimensional reconstruction of congenital heart defects from 3D imaging, and in adapting MRI methods to babies and children. She is most interested in improving image acquisition using MRI and echocardiographic in 3D printing of heart models and has compiled a successful grant portfolio to that end. She also serves as Principal Investigator for an R01 to investigate application of cardiac MRI and Interventional Cardiac Magnetic Resonance on the care of pediatric heart transplant patients. This is a 4.5 million dollar, 5-year contract aimed at using CMR to guide interventional cardiac catheterization procedures, using less sedation for diagnostic CMR procedures and to advance diagnostic CMR capabilities to use less invasive testing.
