Overview
Following a year as chief resident, Nelson Tang, M.D., FACEP, joined the emergency medicine faculty as assistant chief of service (1997–1999). He completed the teaching fellowship of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the National Medical Directors Course and Practicum of the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Physicians. Dr. Tang has served as the disaster control physician for The Johns Hopkins Hospital and emergency medicine liaison to the adult and pediatric trauma services. Dr. Tang has extensive emergency medical services experience and is the executive medical director for Johns Hopkins Lifeline, the ground and air critical care transport program for the Johns Hopkins Health System. He has served as the director of medical operations for the Baltimore Marathon and directs the department’s medical support for numerous mass-gathering special events throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Since 1999, Dr. Tang has served as medical director for the United States Secret Service. In this capacity, he provides direct medical support for international protective missions, national special security events and high-risk training operations at the U.S. Secret Service James J. Rowley Training Center. He is responsible for agencywide emergency medical protocols and the certification of agency emergency medical services providers. Dr. Tang is also the medical director for the operational medical programs within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the United States Marshals Service. Since 2006, Dr. Tang has also served as a tactical physician with the Maryland State Police.
