Overview
Why I became a psychiatrist I became a psychiatrist because I wanted to understand people at their most vulnerable and help them regain control of their lives. I have seen how untreated mental illness affects families, schools, justice systems, and entire communities. Psychiatry allows me to combine science, compassion, and advocacy to help individuals heal while also addressing larger systemic gaps in care. What can clients expect in their first interaction with me? Clients can expect a respectful, nonjudgmental, and collaborative conversation. My first priority is listening and understanding your story, concerns, and goals. I take time to explain diagnoses, options, and next steps in clear language. There is no rush and no pressure. The goal is to create safety, trust, and a shared understanding from the start. What is my role in our work together? My role is to be a guide, educator, and partner in your care. I bring medical expertise, clinical experience, and perspective. Together, we develop a plan that fits your values and circumstances. I aim to empower you with knowledge and tools, not simply prescribe solutions. What do I want clients to take away from working with me? I want clients to leave with clarity, confidence, and hope. Whether through symptom relief, better coping skills, or deeper self-understanding, the goal is lasting improvement and not dependence on care. Ideally, clients feel more in control of their mental health and better equipped to navigate challenges long after our work together ends. What is something I wish more people knew about psychiatry? I wish more people knew that psychiatry isn’t just about medication. It is about understanding the whole person, biology, psychology, environment, and lived experience. Medication can help, but it is only one tool. Good psychiatry respects autonomy, reduces stigma, and focuses on helping people function, thrive, and reclaim meaningful lives.
