What is Cefadroxil?

Cefadroxil is indicated for the treatment of patients with infection caused by susceptible strains of the designated organisms in the following diseases: Urinary tract infections caused by E. coli, P. mirabilis, and Klebsiella species. Skin and skin structure infections caused by staphylococci and/or streptococci. Pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes . Note: Only penicillin by the intramuscular route of administration has been shown to be effective in the prophylaxis of rheumatic fever. Cefadroxil is generally effective in the eradication of streptococci from the oropharynx. However, data establishing the efficacy of cefadroxil for the prophylaxis of subsequent rheumatic fever are not available. Note: Culture and susceptibility tests should be initiated prior to and during therapy. Renal function studies should be performed when indicated. To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of cefadroxil and other antibacterial drugs, cefadroxil should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.

Optimizing the Diagnostic Approach to Cephalosporin Allergy Testing

Summary: Cephalosporin antibiotics are commonly used but can result in allergic reactions and anaphylaxis. There is no clear diagnostic approach for cephalosporin-allergic patients, and guidance for the use of other antibiotics in allergic patients is based on side chain chemical similarity and limited skin testing evidence. This project includes a clinical trial and mechanistic studies to optimize the app...

Extended Oral Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Diabetic Patients With Lower Extremity Fracture: A Multicenter Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Summary: The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if taking an antibiotic pill for 7 days after surgery reduces the risk of wound infection in adults with poorly controlled diabetes who have surgery to fix a broken bone in the leg, ankle, or foot. It will also learn about the safety of the extended antibiotic course. The main questions it aims to answer are: Does a 7-day antibiotic course after surgery ...

BALANCE+: A Platform Trial for Gram Negative Bloodstream Infections

Summary: BALANCE+ is a perpetual multiple domain randomized controlled platform trial to evaluate various treatment strategies for Gram-negative bloodstream infections (GN BSIs). Each domain addresses critical questions in the management of GN BSIs, aiming to refine treatment strategies, enhance patient outcomes, and reduce antimicrobial resistance. The initial vanguard pilot RCT (NCT05893147) started on 2...
