I love my job and I am grateful for the chance to care for children every day – particularly those with food allergies, eczema, asthma, and seasonal allergies, or hay fever. My patients benefit from what I learn from my research into asthma. In addition to being a doctor, I am the mother of two little boys. I enjoy talking with parents about their children, from both a doctor's and a mother's perspective. My husband and I love the outdoors, and are usually outside with our kids on the weekends. Her top areas of expertise are Asthma, Anaphylaxis, and Infantile Neutropenia.

I feel very fortunate to be in the field of Allergy and Immunology, where I get to work with children with some of the rarest diseases of the immune system as well as kids with some of the most common chronic conditions of childhood, such as asthma and seasonal allergies. It is an exciting time to be an Allergist and Immunologist, with many new therapies becoming available. What I enjoy most about what I do is working with families to manage their child’s condition so that they can focus on just being kids. My husband is also a physician at Duke Health. We are excited to return to the Triangle area where we first met as undergraduates. We have three young children and most of my spare time is spent with my beautiful family. Her top areas of expertise are Vibratory Urticaria and Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU).

Since early childhood, I dreamed of becoming a pianist and making people happy by giving joy through music. However, as I volunteered at hospitals and rehabilitation facilities during high school years, a desire to provide a more practical help for sick people drew me to the field of medicine. Our immune system is fascinating in that you need to have the right balance to stay healthy, and it can affect virtually all organ systems in your body. An over-excited immune system can give you allergies or autoimmune disease, whereas if you don’t have enough immunity, it will leave you vulnerable to serious infections. It is rewarding to see a miserable child suffering from allergies, asthma or eczema become happy and smiley after a little bit of help from me. I am incredibly grateful when I am able to identify serious immune deficient states such as SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency), and have the opportunity to save the child’s life through early diagnosis and management. Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my family. My husband and I love to travel and we try to plan at least one family trip a year with our two little boys. Her top areas of expertise are Vibratory Urticaria and Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU).

Duke Infusion Center South Durham
I first became interested in pursuing a career in medicine after being a camp counselor for children with autoimmune type I diabetes when I was in college. I wanted to learn more about and care for patients who had autoimmune diseases and immune dysregulation, which is what led to my dual training in both rheumatology and allergy immunology. My clinical practice, where I teach medical students, residents and rheumatology and allergy/immunology fellows, reflects this comprehensive immunologic approach. Diseases in which I have particular expertise include rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, autoimmune inflammatory eye disease and common variable immune deficiency (CVID). I have several family members who also have autoimmune diseases and I have learned that care can be long term and involve a team approach. As a result, patient-centered care has become a personal goal. Her top areas of expertise are Arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Paget's Disease of Bone, and Sjogren Syndrome.

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Immunologist or Allergist?
Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

Here are some sample questions:
- Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?

- What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.
