What is the definition of Banti's Syndrome?
Banti's syndroms is a disorder of the spleen, an organ that produces red blood cells, in which the spleen destroys newly formed blood cells. Banti's syndrome may be caused by an obstruction of the portal, hepatic (liver), or splenic veins from a congenital abnormality, blood clots, or other diseases that cause inflammation and obstruction of the hepatic veins.
What are the symptoms of Banti's Syndrome?
Symptoms of Banti's syndrome usually includes enlargement of the spleen (splenomegaly), increased blood pressure in the veins in or leading to the liver (portal hypertension) or the spleen. Early symptoms of Banti's syndrome may include weakness, fatigue, and anemia. As the disorder progresses, symptoms may include bruising easily, unremitting fever, bacterial infections, esophageal bleeding (varices), vomiting blood, dark stools, liver enlargement, liver fibrosis (cirrhosis), fluid in the abdomen (ascites), low white blood cells (leukopenia) or platelets (thrombocytopenia), and gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

What are the current treatments for Banti's Syndrome?
Treatment for Banti's syndrome depends on the underlying cause and may include drugs to stop esophageal (ethamolin) or gastric bleeding or portal hypertension. Patients with recurrent bleeding may be treated with surgical shunt placement. Any exposure to arsenic or azathioprine should be stopped.
