What is the definition of Bejel?
Bejel, also known as endemic syphilis, is an infection that is similar to syphilis, as the organism that causes it belongs to the same family of bacterium, known as treponoma (spiral-shaped bacteria, or spirochetes). Instead of sexual transmission, bejel is spread through non-sexual skin contact or shared eating and drinking utensils. While rare in the U.S, bejel is common in countries with hot, dry climates, such as in the Mediterranean and Saharan West Africa.
What are the symptoms of Bejel?
The symptoms of bejel appear in gradual stages, with the late stages being the most severe. Early symptoms include lesions (patchy, slimy ulcerations) that begin in the mucous membranes of the mouth, followed by blisters on the arms, back, and legs as the disease progresses. Late-stage symptoms of bejel may include infections of the leg bones, soft, gummy lumps (gumma) on the roof of the mouth and in nasal passages, swollen lymph nodes, and skin ulcerations under the arms and around the rectum and groin.

What are the current treatments for Bejel?
The usual treatment for early bejel infection is benzathine penicillin G, which will usually provide a cure and relieve bone infection and pain, but may not work for late-stage infections. Patients who are allergic to penicillin may instead receive doxycycline or tetracycline. After treatment the lesions may heal, but permanent scarring may occur.
