Overview
I work in rheumatology, which involves taking care of patients with autoimmune diseases and inflammatory arthritis. I love my field because of the complex processes but most importantly, because it is rewarding to help my patients and be able to develop close relationships with them. I strive to understand how patients are impacted in their daily lives by their condition. Clear communication is key in our field with our patients and all of the doctors on the care team. I treat people with all types of autoimmune disease, but also have a special interest in inflammatory eye disease and work in the Duke Eye Center with ophthalmologists to take care of these patients. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, playing tennis and watching sports . I am from Kentucky and have lived in many states and am looking forward to taking care of patients in North Carolina.

I enjoy the long-term relationships I build with patients as a rheumatologist. I chair the Department of Medicine Faculty Development Academy to mentor education scholars, and I serve as the Vice Chair for Education for the Duke Department of Medicine. In this role, I oversee educational programs throughout the Department of Medicine. When not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two children, exercising, and gardening. Growing up I always loved science. A career in medicine was a natural fit for me, as it combined my love of people with my love for science. I further pursued rheumatology because it is a refreshing challenge to help people with rare diseases. There is so much opportunity for educating patients about their body, and helping them live better lives. Here at Duke Health, I collaborate with the Duke Cancer Institute taking care of patients with rheumatologic diseases and cancers. I also work with the oncologists helping manage specific patients on immune checkpoint blockades for their cancer therapy. Restoring hope to patients in order to help them achieve their goals is always my approach to individualized patient care.
