Marian Michaels, MD, MPH, is a physician in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a professor of pediatrics and surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is board-certified in pediatric infectious diseases by the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Michaels earned her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She went on to complete a residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children/NHS Trust. She also completed a fellowship with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Michaels is recognized nationally and internationally as an authority on infections in immunocompromised hosts particularly after transplantation. She has served in numerous leadership positions locally and nationally including serving as chair of the United States’ Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) ad hoc Disease Transmission Advisory Committee (2018-20) and joining the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS)/OPTN Board of Directors in 2020. Dr. Michaels directs the Clinical Research Unit at UPMC Children’s Hospital with a wide range of studies including those looking at infections in immunocompromised patients, studying treatment of children with congenital cytomegalovirus, and looking at the epidemiology of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in children including SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19. Her research interests include epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of infections in immunocompromised hosts particularly those undergoing transplantation; HIV early intervention projects for children, youth, women, and families; acute respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses in children; congenital cytomegalovirus; and vaccine preventable diseases.
