
Overview
Deepa Burman, MD, FAASM, is a board-certified pediatric sleep medicine specialist and co-director of the Pediatric Sleep Evaluation Center at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She is also an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Burman is directly involved in the patient care, education, and quality improvement initiatives of the Pediatric Sleep Evaluation Program. She received her medical degree from the University College of Medical Sciences in, Delhi, India and received residency training at UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program. She completed a one-year Sleep Medicine Fellowship at the UPMC Montefiore Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine. Before her appointment at UPMC Children's Hospital, she worked as a consultant and faculty at UPMC McKeesport Family Medicine Residency Program where she identified gaps in management of patients with sleep disorders in a primary care setting. Dr. Burman has also been instrumental in disseminating sleep medicine knowledge regionally, nationally, and internationally. She has continually educated many audiences in the field of Adult and Pediatric Sleep Disorders and Obesity Medicine and delivered several talks on those topics. Her research interests include integrated management of pediatric sleep disorders care within a primary care setting, weight management for treatment of sleep disorders, and care for sleep disorders in underserved populations. Pediatric Pulmonology In Lawrenceville
Hiren Muzumdar, MD, is program director of the Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship and of the Pediatric Sleep Evaluation Center and Ventilator Dependent Program at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is also an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is board-certified in pediatric pulmonology and sleep medicine. Dr. Muzumdar earned his medical degree and bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Bombay in Mumbai, India. He completed a residency in pediatrics and earned his post graduate degree in pediatrics at the Topiwala National Medical College, also in Mumbai, India. He completed pediatric residency and a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology at the State University of New York at Brooklyn. He was an assistant professor of pediatrics at the State University of New York, Brooklyn and subsequently at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. He completed training in sleep medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as associate professor of pediatrics. Dr. Muzumdar is interested in obstructive sleep apnea in pediatric patients and his work has demonstrated the changes in autonomic function in children caused by sleep apnea. He is also interested in identification of obstructive sleep apnea in children with tracheostomies prior to decannulation of the tracheostomy. He was a member of the group that defined the effects of adenotonsillectomy in children with obstructive sleep apnea in a large multicenter study (the ChAt study). In his role as program director of pediatric pulmonology, he is interested in the effects of the COVID-19 epidemic on training, trainees, and faculty.
