Overview

Dr. Kara McElligott Park is changing the game when it comes to women’s health. Fed up with the barriers that exist between provider and patient in traditional healthcare setting, she wanted to make menopause care easy and accessible. A mom who experienced premature menopause while caring for a young child and managing a chronic illness, she understands how disruptive the symptoms of menopause can be. She empowers women by taking a collaborative approach to care. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine and a practicing OB/GYN for many years, Kara is here as a doctor and advocate, committed to helping you feel like yourself again.

Kara adores gardening, woodworking, baking, and visiting the Farmer's Market with her daughter on Saturdays.

"I can distinctly remember the awe and utter amazement I felt watching my first cesarean delivery. I knew that there was a baby inside the mother's abdomen, but it was amazing to see the doctors deliver it. To see it just ""pop out"". Still, to this day, I get that feeling of awe and amazement every time I help a mom deliver her baby. I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful moment in a family's life. As a maternal fetal medicine specialist, I take care of sick moms, sick babies, and sick pregnancies. Each day, while I get to help women and their families with big wins and happy moments, I also have the opportunity to help them through sad times and some of the worst moments of their lives. It is these hard and sad moments that make the happy ones even more meaningful. I also spend some of my time helping to teach medical students about Ob/Gyn. I really enjoy teaching, and sharing my love for Ob/Gyn with young learners is one of my favorite parts of my job. My other very important job is being a mom. I have three fantastic young boys that keep me busy and remind me on a daily basis how important family is. I love to swim and make jam. Apricot Jam is my favorite.". I am a maternal-fetal medicine doctor and provide obstetrical care to high-risk moms, either because the mother could have a maternal medical complication or the fetus could be affected by a complication or an anomaly. My primary role is to help patients make an informed decision on determining when to deliver and how, meaning at what gestational age we should do a C-section or have a vaginal birth. These questions can be incredibly complex and there’s not a perfect right or wrong answer, so I help the patient and their families think through options so they can make an informed decision for their unique situation. Here at Duke, we foster a collaborative environment, which is especially important in this subspecialty, since the fetus will oftentimes have a condition that requires a pediatric team. So we all work well together to tailor a plan that is specific to the patient and their needs. Dr. Wheeler is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Postpartum Depression. Her top areas of expertise are Preeclampsia, Postpartum Depression, Endometritis, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infection.
