Childhood should be one of the most enjoyable times of our lives, full of happy memories and enriching experiences. Despite their innocence, children are often faced with difficulties and limitations as they grow. Whether it be scoliosis, hip dysplasia, limb deformity and fractures, or neuromuscular conditions, no child ever asks to be brought to the doctor’s office. My passion for pediatric orthopaedics developed from a desire to help children overcome these obstacles and allow them to return to what they enjoy doing most and experience a care-free childhood. My goal is to support and guide patients and families through their treatment courses, from start to finish, through a shared decision-making approach. What makes pediatric orthopaedics so special to me is the relationships that form with families as we work together over time, sometimes from infancy through adolescence. I am returning to Duke with my wife and four children. We have been living in eastern North Carolina where I have been in private practice doing pediatric and adult spinal surgery for 20 years. I am board certified in both orthopaedics and spinal surgery and was drawn to the specialty after working at a Shriner's hospital during my training. I try to approach each individual patient with a few fundamental goals. I first try to listen to what has brought someone into my office and then provide them with a diagnosis. I focus on options for management  both non-operative as well as surgery. I also hope to engage the patient or family to participate in the  decisions as it relates to the treatment options available to them.
