Adolfo Etchegaray, MD, is the Chief of Fetal Medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He brings over a decade of experience in maternal-fetal medicine and fetal surgery and years of program development to our Fetal Center. Before joining Nationwide Children’s, Dr. Etchegaray was recruited by the Austral University Hospital in Pilar, Argentina to develop one of the first fetal medicine units in the country, where he pioneered innovations in surgical techniques, implemented sequential multiparametric screening programs and created a two-year fellowship.While growing Austral University Hospital to become a main national referral center for fetal pathology and home to one of the most active fetal surgery programs in Latin America, Dr. Etchegaray held many titles, including Head of the Fetal Medicine Unit, Co-Director of the Fetal Surgery Program, and Director of Fellowship in Fetal Medicine. Outside of the Hospital, Dr. Etchegaray was also the Director of Diploma in Fetal Medicine and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics at the Universidad Austal and an instructor for The Fetal Medicine Foundation in the United Kingdom.Dr. Etchegaray’s main areas of interest and research are congenital anomalies, fetal therapy, and prenatal screening for chromosomal diseases and preeclampsia. His work has been published in many peer-reviewed journals, and he has been an invited speaker at more than 100 national and international meetings. Spending more than 500 hours teaching every year, Dr. Etchegaray has supervised the training of more than 700 maternal-fetal medicine subspecialists.After receiving his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires in 2001, Dr. Etchegaray completed specialist training in obstetrics and gynecology from the Ministry of Health and Environment, Buenos Aires, in 2006, where he served as chief resident. Furthering his education, Dr. Etchegaray completed his diploma in fetal medicine from the Fetal Medicine Foundation in the United Kingdom in 2009 under Dr. Kypros Nicolaides, one of the foremost authorities in fetal medicine. In that same year, he completed a research fellowship at the Harris Birthright Research Center for Fetal Medicine at King’s College Hospital and then finished his clinical fellowship in Fetal Medicine in Spain. His most recent training includes a master’s in clinical effectiveness from the Institute of Clinical Effectiveness in Buenos Aires in 2018.Dr. Etchegaray is a past president and founding member of the Argentine Society of Prenatal Diagnosis and Treatment (SADIPT) and an active member of several organizations including the Argentine Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Buenos Aires (SOGIBA), International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG), International Society of Prenatal Diagnosis (ISPD), International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society (IFMSS) and the Spina Bifida Fetoscopic Repair Consortium.
