I have chosen to direct my efforts as a physician toward improving the quality of life for women who are dealing with pelvic floor disorders. I focus on listening to a patient's description of her symptoms and their impact on her, her goals for treatment, and – by using evidence-based techniques– I evaluate her condition. Treatment options might vary from patient to patient; the best way to proceed is often an individualized decision. I am pleased to have been a member of the Duke faculty since 1996. I became interested in pelvic floor disorders because of the emphasis on improving the quality of life. For most pelvic floor disorders – bladder, bowel, sexual dysfunction, or vaginal bulge – there are usually multiple treatment options with different pros and cons. Because each woman is different, I tend to teach each patient about her own pelvic floor issues, and then we collaborate to develop a treatment plan that incorporates her specific goals. I am actively involved in research because I think that is the way that we will develop better treatment options for women.
