Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center
Anna Powell, M.D., M.S., an assistant professor based on the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus has advanced training in infectious disease. She has expertise in reproductive infectious disease and vulvovaginal disorders, including HIV during pregnancy, pre-exposure prophylaxis, vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis. Dr. Powell has research interest in preterm birth among women living with HIV, and she was a recipient of a prestigious Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) awards. She is now funded through a Career Development Award (K23) from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to study the vaginal microbiome and metabolites of preterm birth among women with and without HIV. Her BIRCWH project focuses on how markers of microbial translocation, vitamin D and progesterone correlate with preterm birth among women who are pregnant and living with HIV. Dr. Powell completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Drexel University College of Medicine-Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. She continued her specialization in reproductive infectious disease through a fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she also obtained a master’s in clinical research.
