
Overview
Dr. O’Brien is a native Texan and orthopedic surgeon who is fellowship trained in Sports Medicine. He is from west Texas and trained at some of the top institutions across the country. During his specialty training which focused on arthroscopic (minimally invasive) surgery, he worked with all levels of athletes including the Houston Texans, Rockets, Astros, Dynamo, and the University of Houston Athletics. Although he has expertise in sports medicine, he also focuses on general orthopedics including acute or chronic knee, shoulder and hip problems, fracture care, and pediatric injuries. While he has cared for athletes of the highest level, he receives the same satisfaction in caring for the weekend warrior. Dr. O’Brien also offers platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for a variety of conditions to accelerate healing in a specific area. Known for their clotting abilities, platelets also contain growth factors that can trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration or healing in the treated area. Procedures Dr. O’Brien provides include but are not limited to total knee replacement, arthroscopic knee surgery, ligament repair, ankle fracture repair, ruptured bicep/tricep repair, quadriceps/hamstring repair, arthroscopic shoulder surgery, and arthroscopic hip replacement. Outside of the OR, he enjoys spending time with his wife, three children and Labrador. They love outdoor activities and attending Baylor sporting events. Dr. O’Brien especially enjoys hiking, fly fishing and skiing. He is also proud to serve as team physician for athletes at Manor High School. He is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurosurgery, at the Dell Medical School, University of Texas, in Austin. There, he supervises the Spine Surgery rotation for orthopaedic surgery residents and medical students. He is a past President of the North American Spine Society.Born to a military family in Fort Benning Georgia, Dr. Truumees was a Bowman Scholar at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine. After finishing medical school in 1993, he entered the orthopaedic surgery residency program at the Cleveland Clinic. Upon completion of residency in 1998, he moved to Royal Oak, Michigan, where he completed a fellowship in Spine Surgery under Dr. Harry Herkowitz at the William Beaumont Hospital Spine Center. Dr. Truumees entered clinical practice in 1999 joining Drs. Herkowitz and Fischgrund at the Michigan Orthopaedic Institute. In October 2010, Dr. Truumees relocated to Austin, Texas.His academic work has included more than 15 NIH and industry sponsored multicenter trials, which generated over 30 peer reviewed publications of original research, 40 invited publications, and 50 chapters and monographs. He was editor of the AAOS Orthopaedic Knowledge Update Spine, 5th and 6th Editions. Dr. Truumees frequently participates in national and international events, including more than 200 presentations, lectureships, and instructorships.Dr. Truumees’ honors include membership in the American Orthopaedic Association and Detroit Hour Magazine and Texas Monthly “Top Doctor” status. Others include the American Academic of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Senior Achievement Awards and membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He was a member of the AAOS Communications Cabinet and Editor-in-Chief of AAOS Now.Dr. Truumees is a Deputy Editor of JBJS: Essential Surgical Techniques and was a Deputy Editor of the Spine Journal. He sits on the editorial boards of Spine and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, among others. He edited Selective Exposures: Spine and two issues of Seminars in Spine Surgery.While at Beaumont, Dr. Truumees was Orthopaedic Director of the Gehring Biomechanics Laboratory and was on the adjunct faculty of the Wayne State University Bioengineering Center.
