Dr. Mok is keenly interested in applying his engineering and medical training to affect pain relief and restore function. His areas of interest range from primary hip and knee replacement to complex hip and knee deformity correction, to post-traumatic reconstruction to revision hip and knee replacement. He also holds a special interest in the unique linkage between hip and knee joint symptomatology and the implications of this linkage in diagnosis and treatment. His practice philosophy is to educate, engage and invest the patient in their own care. The care of the patient requires a team effort, with the most valuable player being the patients themselves. His research interests include interdisciplinary spine care programs, outcomes analysis, and spinal biomechanics. He is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurosurgery, at the Dell Medical School, University of Texas, in Austin. There, he supervises the Spine Surgery rotation for orthopaedic surgery residents and medical students. He is a past President of the North American Spine Society.Born to a military family in Fort Benning Georgia, Dr. Truumees was a Bowman Scholar at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine. After finishing medical school in 1993, he entered the orthopaedic surgery residency program at the Cleveland Clinic. Upon completion of residency in 1998, he moved to Royal Oak, Michigan, where he completed a fellowship in Spine Surgery under Dr. Harry Herkowitz at the William Beaumont Hospital Spine Center. Dr. Truumees entered clinical practice in 1999 joining Drs. Herkowitz and Fischgrund at the Michigan Orthopaedic Institute. In October 2010, Dr. Truumees relocated to Austin, Texas.His academic work has included more than 15 NIH and industry sponsored multicenter trials, which generated over 30 peer reviewed publications of original research, 40 invited publications, and 50 chapters and monographs. He was editor of the AAOS Orthopaedic Knowledge Update Spine, 5th and 6th Editions. Dr. Truumees frequently participates in national and international events, including more than 200 presentations, lectureships, and instructorships.Dr. Truumees’ honors include membership in the American Orthopaedic Association and Detroit Hour Magazine and Texas Monthly “Top Doctor” status. Others include the American Academic of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Senior Achievement Awards and membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He was a member of the AAOS Communications Cabinet and Editor-in-Chief of AAOS Now.Dr. Truumees is a Deputy Editor of JBJS: Essential Surgical Techniques and was a Deputy Editor of the Spine Journal. He sits on the editorial boards of Spine and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, among others. He edited Selective Exposures: Spine and two issues of Seminars in Spine Surgery.While at Beaumont, Dr. Truumees was Orthopaedic Director of the Gehring Biomechanics Laboratory and was on the adjunct faculty of the Wayne State University Bioengineering Center.
