I have dedicated my career as an advanced practice nurse to caring for patients suffering from pain. Over the years, I have developed a philosophy of care that emphasizes listening, compassion, shared decision making and trust. My goal is to educate patients about their choices, set realistic goals, remove potential barriers and guide them to make well-informed decisions. My interest in this field was sparked in 1996 when I completed an honors independent study of cancer pain management while in nursing school at the University of Iowa. I was struck by the significant impact untreated pain had on patients' emotional and physical health. I gained further insight into the impact of acute pain while working as an intensive care unit nurse. When I received my master's degree and was licensed as an advanced registered nurse practitioner, I chose to specialize in pain management and began working in a multidisciplinary pain clinic. While away from work, I can often be found running around the chain of lakes in Minneapolis or biking along the Mississippi River. My greatest joy comes from spending time with my husband and two daughters. We enjoy the adventure of traveling to tropical destinations as well as the comfort of take-out dinners in front of a movie.
