
Overview
Chad Ishmael, M.D., is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon with expertise in treating injuries to the arms and legs, including complex joint fractures, as well as injuries to the pelvis and the hip joint. He is also experienced in treating patients who have experienced complications related to traumatic injuries, such as nonunions and malunions of the bones and fracture-related infections. After graduating from Stanford University, Dr. Ishmael was awarded his medical degree with honors in service from Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at UCLA, and obtained further training as an orthopaedic traumatology fellow at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dr. Ishmael is committed to helping move the field of orthopaedic trauma forward and improving care for all patients. An active researcher, he has numerous publications in both clinical and translational science research, and he has presented his work at multiple national academic meetings. During residency, Dr. Ishmael completed a research fellowship at the Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center at UCLA and was awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (T32) from the National Institutes of Health in support of his work. He is particularly interested in improving patient outcomes after traumatic injuries, investigating new techniques for prevention and treatment of orthopaedic infections, and understanding the role of mental health in recovery after a trauma. With a strong interest in education and mentorship, Dr. Ishmael is actively involved in the teaching of medical students and orthopaedic surgery residents. He was born and raised in the islands of the Caribbean, and has a special interest in global health and in reducing health care disparities in the United States and around the world. Dr. Ishmael is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, AO Trauma, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Association.
