Dr. Michaels directs the Clinical Research Unit at UPMC Children’s Hospital with a wide range of studies including those looking at infections in immunocompromised patients, studying treatment of children with congenital cytomegalovirus, and looking at the epidemiology of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in children including SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19. Her research interests include epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of infections in immunocompromised hosts particularly those undergoing transplantation; HIV early intervention projects for children, youth, women, and families; acute respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses in children; congenital cytomegalovirus; and vaccine preventable diseases.
