Overview
David Gamm, MD, PhD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric ophthalmologist and adult strabismus specialist. He is also a researcher and a professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.Dr. Gamm diagnoses and treats both children and adults with strabismus — eyes that look in different directions. For patients under age 18, Dr. Gamm also treats all types of eye disorders. These include low vision, double vision, weak eye muscles, tear duct problems, eye injuries, genetic issues and disorders that affect normal vision development.During initial visits, Dr. Gamm listens closely to patients and families and gives them time to talk about their concerns. He asks key follow-up questions to learn how vision problems affect his patients’ lives. Then, he explains their diagnoses and outlines treatment plans, including surgical options and expected results.To improve patient care, Dr. Gamm also conducts potentially life-changing research. He studies ways to use stem cells to correct problems with the retina, including issues that lead to macular degeneration and blindness.During his free time, Dr. Gamm enjoys spending time with his family.The proper eyeglasses or the right treatments can make a huge difference in how children learn to walk, talk and see the world.
