Overview

Diane Sliwka is a hospitalist, a specialist in the care of hospitalized patients. Since 2014, she has served as UCSF Health's Chief Physician Experience Officer, a role that includes using metrics to assess the work experience of providers as well as directing efforts to improve their well-being and address structural and systemic challenges they experience. Since 2019, she has also co-chaired the University of California's system-wide collaborative on physician well-being. Sliwka leads UCSF Health's Center for Enhancement of Communication in Healthcare, which offers training for clinicians in relationship-centered communication skills. She co-chairs the Health Equity Council at UCSF Health and leads clinical communications related to the COVID pandemic. From 2012 to 2020, she served as executive medical director for patient experience at UCSF, focusing on bringing about improvements through doctor engagement. After graduating from Dartmouth College with a bachelor's degree in biology, Sliwka earned her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Maine Medical Center. She then worked as a clinician-educator and hospitalist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where she completed the Rabkin Fellowship in Medical Education, with a focus on simulation education, before joining UCSF. Sliwka has completed leadership training through the UCSF Institute for Physician Leadership and Coro's Women in Leadership Program. She is a faculty member for the Academy of Communication in Healthcare. She has completed Stanford Medicine's course for experienced health care leaders on designing and managing a physician well-being program, and she is a member of the Collaborative for Healing and Renewal in Medicine (CHARM) Chief Wellness Officer Group. Sliwka's personal interests include watching the Golden State Warriors, spending time with family, gardening, cooking and running.
