
Overview
Douglas A. Zaruta, MD, is an orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon specializing in conditions of the shoulder and knee. He performs open and arthroscopic surgical repair and reconstruction of torn ligaments, tendons and cartilage.|He has clinical expertise working with athletes at recreational, competitive and elite levels of play. However, Dr. Zaruta says he enjoys treating “any active person looking to restore mobility and function, whether they’re athletes, weekend warriors, performers, workers or hobbyists.”|Common shoulder conditions he treats includes shoulder dislocation, shoulder separation, labral tear, impingement, bursitis, rotator cuff tear and arthritis. He also treats common knee conditions, including meniscus tear, ACL injury, articular cartilage injury, patella dislocation and arthritis.|A former athlete himself, Dr. Zaruta is proud of his roots as an athletic trainer — which he describes as the foundation for his path to becoming a sports medicine surgeon. He has cared for high school, collegiate and professional athletes, including the Orlando City Soccer Club, Washington Nationals baseball team, Nazareth College ice hockey team and the University of Pittsburgh football, swimming/diving and women’s basketball teams.|Dr. Zaruta understands that each patient has unique needs and prides himself on taking a personalized and team approach to create treatment plans. “My goal is to empower my patients to become active participants in their recovery,” he says.|Having earned his master’s degree in sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Zaruta was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society while in medical school at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton. He completed his fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine at Orlando Health. A native of the Back Mountain area of northeast PA, Dr. Zaruta is excited to be back home providing care to his community. In his spare time, he loves spending time with his wife, two children and other family and friends. He also enjoys running, biking and golfing.
