Dr. Douglas Kitchin

Perry Pickhardt, MD, is a UW Health radiologist and a professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He performs advanced abdominal imaging to help diagnose a wide range of conditions affecting the stomach, large and small intestines, liver, spleen and gallbladder.Dr. Pickhardt uses X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds to diagnose conditions such as abdominal pain, appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix) and diverticulitis (inflammation or infection in the pouches of the digestive tract). He also performs biopsies (removing tissue or cells for examination) using imaging guidance.Dr. Pickhardt believes teamwork is important for figuring out a patient’s condition and the next steps of their treatment. He listens carefully to what patients tell him about their pain or discomfort before using the most advanced technology to uncover the reason behind a patient’s health condition.In addition to his clinical practice and teaching role, Dr. Pickhardt conducts research on CT scans to find new ways to screen for colon cancer and perform virtual physical exams.In his free time, Dr. Pickhardt enjoys sports, music, traveling with his family, playing golf and restoring a prairie.I enjoy figuring out how to help a patient get on the road to recovery.
