Dr. Francisco Gelpi

Dr. Francisco Gelpi-Hammerschmidt earned his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Puerto Rico, master’s degree in public health from Harvard University and medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in Philadelphia at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he served as chief resident. He did his fellowship training in urology at Harvard University-Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In practice since 2008, Dr. Gelpi-Hammerschmidt is board certified in urology. His primary clinical interests are urologic oncology, endourology, robotic surgery and clinical research outcomes. He is fluent in Spanish and speaks basic Portuguese. Dr. Gelpi-Hammerschmidt has published in peer-reviewed medical journals, presented at regional/national meetings and received numerous awards for his work. He is a member of the American Urological Association, American College of Surgeons, Endourological Society and American College of Physician Executives. While in medical school, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. His patients rate him very highly on the thoroughness of his examinations, ability to answer questions, clarity of instructions, friendliness and caring attitude, as well his inclusion of patients in decision-making.

His clinical expertise encompasses Bladder Cancer, Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC), Urothelial Cancer, Nephrectomy, and Cystectomy.

He is actively involved in clinical research, co-authoring 10 peer reviewed articles.
