Dr. Hughes serves as Medical Director for Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Office of Telemedicine and Medical Director of Pediatric Telemedicine for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. She is a medical informaticist and co-chairs the Johns Hopkins Patient Family Centered Design (MyChart) committee. Dr. Hughes is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After earning an undergraduate degree at Haverford College, Dr. Hughes attended medical school at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and received a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She completed a residency in pediatrics and served as Chief Resident at Johns Hopkins, where she stayed on to complete a research fellowship in General Academic Pediatrics. Dr. Hughes is the co-editor of the Harriet Lane Handbook, 21st Edition, which is one of the most widely used pediatric handbooks nationally and internationally. She previously served as Associate Program Director for Pediatric residency training and the director of the Pediatric Residency Program Health Equity Track. Dr. Hughes is a national leader in the field of telemedicine and patient-facing digital health technologies. Dr. Hughes and team have won the AAMC’s Telehealth Equity Catalyst Award for three consecutive years (2022, 2023, and 2024). In 2023, Helen was selected to join the American Telemedicine Association’s Clinician Council – a group of approximately 35 clinician telehealth leaders who are developing clinical practice guidance for the nation’s leading telemedicine professional society. Dr. Hughes is board certified in American Board Of Pediatrics. She is actively involved in clinical research, co-authoring 3 peer reviewed articles.
