Dr. Huy Hoang

Dr. Gary E. Deng is a physician and director of Integrative Oncology for the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute.He specializes in a whole-person, integrative approach to supporting patients with cancer approach through all phases of treatment, survivorship and prevention.Deng earned his medical degree from Beijing Medical University, followed by a residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, where he received research training at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He also holds a PhD in microbiology and immunology from the University of Miami in Florida.Before joining UCI Health, Deng built an integrative health program over more than two decades at Memorial Sloan Cancer Center in New York City. He has served as principal investigator for research studies on acupuncture, yoga and botanical agents to treat and prevent disease. His scholarly work includes developing clinical practice guidelines for integrative oncology, reviews and textbook chapters. He is a past president and member of the Society for Integrative Oncology and author of the 2022 book, “The Wellness Principles: Cooking for a Healthy Life.”Deng’s goal is to help each patient achieve the best outcomes, using evidence-based integrative health therapies to improve their mental, physical and spiritual well-being in their fight against cancer. His clinical expertise includes nutrition counseling, mindfulness training, sleep training, biofeedback, yoga, tai chi, as well as acupuncture and massage therapy to manage pain and discomfort. Dr. Shaista Malik is a board-certified UCI Health cardiologist and integrative medicine practitioner. She is the founding medical director of the preventive cardiology and cardiac rehab programs, founding executive director of the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute and the founding associate vice chancellor, integrative health, of the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences.Malik received her BA and BS degrees from Stanford University. She received her MD degree from UC Irvine School of Medicine and graduated with AOA honors. She also completed a MPH degree with honors and a PhD degree, both from UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.She has received several National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants, including a career development award and a K23 from NIH (NHLBI) looking at the role of cardiac CT in those with diabetes, and an RO1 grant, looking at the genetic, protein, and imaging markers of early heart disease. She has authored over 70 publications, co-edited two textbooks on preventive cardiology, and written over 20 book chapters. Her research efforts have had high impact with an h-index of 50 and garnering 29,779 citations. She has been recognized as an expert in cardiovascular imaging, with leadership roles in the American College of Cardiology’s Imaging Council, a standing member of NIH’s study section in cardiovascular disease, and a member of the oversight committee of the American Heart Association’s Strategic Focused Research Network. She has served on several editorial boards including as section editor for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Imaging and Current Cardiology Reports. She is currently the associate editor for the Frontiers in Medicine, Precision Medicine journal and the associate editor for the Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine journal.As a cardiologist, Malik specializes in integrative cardiology and precision health. Her excellence in clinical care has earned her recognition as a Physician of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association and Southern California Super Doctors. In the area of integrative health, Malik takes a “whole-person” approach using all modalities of care and the latest diagnostic testing, along with the patient’s history, to determine the root causes of illness and provide personalized therapies that can achieve optimal health and healing.
