
Overview
Dr. Fernandez Nievas specializes in pediatric critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children’s. He joined the hospital staff in 2020. He previously served as an attending physician in pediatric critical care and medical director of pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse, New York, and medical director of pediatric respiratory therapy at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. Dr. Fernandez Nievas earned his medical degree from Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires in Argentina. He completed a pediatric residency at Hospital Nacional Alejandro Posadas in Buenos Aires, and later a pediatric residency at Maimonides Infants & Children’s Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, where he also served as chief resident. He completed a pediatric critical care fellowship at Hospital Italiano in Buenos Aires, a pediatric pulmonary medicine fellowship at Children’s Hospital Health Science Center/University of Winnipeg in Canada, and a pediatric critical care fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. He holds a Master of Public Administration from Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He is a Certified Physician Executive (CPE), a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and completed a chief quality officer development program at the Institute for Health Improvement. His clinical and research interests include severe asthma, ventilator support, pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS), sepsis, ECMO and quality improvement.
