Dr. James Taggart

James Taggart comes from a multicultural household—his mother was Colombian, and his father was British. Growing up with that mix gave him a strong sense of empathy, especially for people from different cultural backgrounds or those who are new to the country. He started off his surgical training at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he learned exceptional evidence-based trauma care. After that, he headed to New York City and finished up at Lenox Hill Hospital. While there, he picked up some NYC street smarts and had the chance to learn from some truly outstanding surgical mentors with a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery. Most recently, James moved here from the great state of Alaska, where he practiced rural general surgery. Both of his kids were born there, and he hopes his young daughter never loses that true Alaskan grit. Back in Alaska, he used to say his goal was to offer surgical care equal to that of any major metropolitan hospital. That mission hasn’t changed. He’s still passionate about supporting rural colleagues in whatever way he can, and he sees teaching those around him as a big part of his job too. He knows the healthcare environment has been through a lot over the past 20 years, and it will keep changing in ways we cannot fully predict. Through it all, one thing stays the same: the patient comes first. He’s excited and honored to care for you and your family and will respect and work within your values as much as possible.
