Rachel Engen, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric nephrologist. She specializes in caring for children with kidney disease and high blood pressure. Dr. Engen is also an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health where she is actively involved in transplant care and research while helping young patients live healthier lives through advanced treatments.Dr. Engen treats children with a wide range of kidney-related conditions. Many of her patients were born with kidney abnormalities or developed kidney disease later in life. She also works with children who have high blood pressure. Her special interests include pediatric kidney transplant care and prenatal consultations for babies diagnosed with kidney problems before birth.Dr. Engen believes in building trust with patients and families. She takes time to explain complex medical issues in ways that are easy to understand. She listens carefully to each family’s concerns and works with them to create a care plan that fits their needs. Her goal is to help children live full and active lives, even while managing serious health conditions.Outside of work, Dr. Engen enjoys hiking and exploring Wisconsin’s state parks, especially in the Driftless area. She also volunteers with the Madison Ballet and participates in their Nutcracker performances. Her love for ballet began in childhood and continues to be a joyful part of her life.My hope for my patients is that after their transplant they can live the widest possible life. Yes, they will have to see a doctor and yes they will have to take medications but I want them to be able to graduate high school, to play sports, to travel, to make new friends and go on to live their full rich and adult life. Neil Paloian, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric nephrologist (kidney doctor) and an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.Dr. Paloian treats children with kidney conditions, such as kidney stones, blood or protein in the urine, and kidney abnormalities. He also has a special interest in caring for children who have metabolic bone disease (mineral imbalances that weaken the bone) caused by chronic kidney disease.Committed to providing personalized care, Dr. Paloian listens to patients and their families to understand their concerns and goals for treatment. He educates them about the condition and treatment options, so families can share in making health care decisions.Dr. Paloian is happy to be a member of the UW Health team because he feels that UW Health offers the best of both worlds — world-class technology and expertise, with a cozy community feel.Dr. Paloian conducts research that focuses on the causes of kidney stones in children and possible new treatments. Dr. Bartosh received her medical degree and completed residency training in pediatrics and fellowship training in pediatric nephrology at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children/Temple Medical School in Philadelphia. Following a seven-year faculty position at the University of Chicago, she came to Madison to head the Pediatric Nephrology Division at University of Wisconsin Children’s Hospital. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology, with special interests in pediatric renal failure, dialysis and transplantation, cardiac involvement and growth in children with renal disease, and kidney stones in childhood.
