Karen A Friedman MD MS-HPPL is a Clinician Educator in the Department of Internal Medicine. She is the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Hospital, Vice Chair for Education, and the Lawrence Scherr Endowed Professor of Medical Education.Dr. Friedman earned her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical School and did her residency at North Shore University Hospital. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and in her clinical role practices as an Academic Hospitalist at Northwell Health since 2005. She completed her master s in Health Professions Pedagogy and Leadership from Hofstra University and is a graduate of the prestigious Hedwig van Amerigan Executive Leadership in Executive Medicine (ELAM) Fellowship. She is a faculty member of Alpha Omega Alpha.Dr. Friedman has dedicated her career and research to medical education. She has published in and presents nationally on novel residency curricula, assessment methods in competency based medical education and the transition from UME to GME. She works locally and nationally to foster best practices in faculty development and building pipelines of clinician educators through clinician educator tracks and a medical education collaborative. She is the author of The Informed Patient- published in 2017 by Cornell University Press.Dr. Friedman also focus on gender equity in medicine and is one of the founding members of the gender equity committee in the department. On a national level she works to support the promotion of female clinician educators in their promotion through a referee letter writer repository she started in Internal Medicine.When she is not working, she is busy raising her four children and really enjoys running long distances with friends and colleagues for medals.
