Overview
As an oculoplastic and orbital surgeon, I see patients with conditions that affect the eyelids, the tear drainage system and the eye socket (orbit). Patients are referred to me for drooping of the upper eyelids or eyebrows when the drooping gets severe enough to block vision (eyelid ptosis, dermatochalasis, brow ptosis); bumps or growths on the eyelids; skin cancer of the eyelids; eyelashes that are poking and irritating the eyes (trichiasis); abnormal tearing due to a blockage in the tear drainage system (nasolacrimal duct obstruction); abnormal positions of the lower eyelids (entropion, ectropion); abnormal twitching of the eyelids (blepharospasm); problems in the eye socket (orbit) such as growths, infections or inflammation; and thyroid disease affecting the eyes. Patients also see me for injuries to the eyelids and tear drainage system; for broken bones in the eye socket; and in rare instances when an eye needs to be removed due to a severe infection, intractable pain or cancer. Most of my patients need some form of surgery. What I enjoy most about my work is meeting new patients every day, finding out what concerns them and why they have come to see me, and talking to them about what I might be able to do to help them address their concerns. Each of my patients is unique, and I have learned over the years that two patients with the same condition may need and want very different treatments - what is right for one person may not be what another person is looking for.
