Dr. Maria J. Gutierrez is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the division of Pediatric Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her clinical practice focuses on pediatric immunological diseases, including immunodeficiencies, immune dysregulation, and autoinflammatory disorders. Dr. Gutierrez is also a co-founder and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Childhood Interstitial and Immune Lung Diseases Program and focuses on caring for children with immunological disorders affecting the lungs. Dr. Gutierrez obtained her medical degree from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, Colombia. She completed her pediatric residency at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, followed by a combined fellowship in Allergy, Immunology, and Pediatric Rheumatology at Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and research training in immunology and molecular biology at the National Institute of Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS/NIH). After joining Johns Hopkins in 2015, she completed a master's in clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Gutierrez's research focuses on early-life immunology, seeking to understand how immune cells develop and how immune responses deter pathogens in infants and young children, who represent a highly vulnerable population. Her research has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Clinician Scientist Award, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) Foundation Faculty Development Award, and an NIH-K23 Career Development Award. Dr. Gutierrez is a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI) and is affiliated with the Clinical Immunology Society (CIS), the American Association of Immunologists (AAI), and the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA).
