
Overview
Dr. Mary Aitken earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in epidemiology from the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle. She completed her internship and residency in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and a fellowship in pediatrics at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Aitken, who has been in practice since 1988, is board certified in pediatrics. Among her clinical interests are brain injuries, head trauma, wounds and injuries, and pediatric diabetes. Her research interests include primary prevention of injury and post-injury assessment of health status and outcomes. She has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and other agencies to support her studies of injury prevention related to teen driving, car seats, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and safe sleep in high-risk populations. She has been an advocate at the state and national levels on the issue of ATV safety. Dr. Aitken is chair of the Department of Pediatrics at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), where she holds the Dan L. Duncan Distinguished University Chair in Pediatrics. She is also physician-in-chief at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.
