John Wilson, MD, MS, is a UW Health sports medicine doctor. He’s also an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. In addition, he serves as a team physician for the University of Wisconsin Badgers.Dr. Wilson diagnoses and treats individuals of all skill levels with conditions such as arthritis, fractures, overuse injuries and tendinitis (inflamed tendons). Treating chronic (ongoing) conditions and sudden injuries, Dr. Wilson helps people safely return to sports. He guides athletes toward personalized achievement and treatment goals. He works closely with patients and specialists, including physical therapists, rehabilitation doctors, diagnostic imaging experts and others.As an athlete, Dr. Wilson understands the emotional challenges of sports injuries. His holistic approach includes addressing both physical and mental health concerns. Through preventive education and care, he helps athletes improve performance and reduce injury risks.Dr. Wilson also researches tendinopathy (chronic tendon degeneration). His team studies biologics (treatments developed from living organisms), such as platelet-rich plasma (concentrated blood protein) that stimulates healing.Outside of work, Dr. Wilson coaches high school football and enjoys his sons’ sports, theater and musical activities.It’s really rewarding to develop relationships with my patients over the years and to see them achieve their goals and get back to their favorite activities.
