He received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and earned a medical degree from the University of South Alabama. He then completed his internship, residency, and fellowship training at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. After four years of having a private practice in California, Dr. McNeely returned to New Orleans to help rebuild the gastroenterology program at Oschner Clinic, which was affected by Hurricane Katrina. He also previously served as a gastroenterologist in Beaumont, Texas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
