
Overview
Dr. Peter Hill serves as the senior vice president of medical affairs for the Johns Hopkins Health System and vice president of medical affairs for the Johns Hopkins Hospital, appointed to these positions in March, 2017. As senior vice president for medical affairs, he works closely with the vice presidents of medical affairs, clinical directors and medical staff members throughout the health system to strengthen our efforts to provide safe, efficient and cost-effective health care. Together with his colleagues, Dr. Hill supports improvements for medical staff members in areas such as peer review, professionalism, and the advancement of high-value care practice. In his role as vice president of medical affairs for The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Hill leads the functions of the medical staff and serves as the Hospital's chief medical officer, while providing leadership for programs, including medical staff administration, pharmacy, health information management, hospital epidemiology and infection control, spiritual care and chaplaincy, and patient safety. Dr. Hill earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, his master's degree from Brown University and his medical degree from the University of Maryland. He completed his residency and served as chief resident in emergency medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, joining the faculty of the school of medicine as assistant chief of service. He became the medical director of the Emergency Acute Care Unit in 2001, named clinical director for the Department of Emergency Medicine in 2005, became an associate professor in 2010 and promoted to the role of vice chair of clinical affairs for the department in 2012. Dr. Hill is a devoted collaborative leader, and works diligently to help advance patient care, safety and quality improvement at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and throughout the health system. Research Summary Dr. Hill is actively involved in many specialty interests, including protocol development to reduce hospital readmissions and improve emergency department operations, as well as characterization of emergency department observation unit population. His research interests include the utilization, management and role of observation or acute care medicine in the practice of emergency medicine. Specifically, he is interested in the role this field can play in the interdisciplinary management of special disease process, such as asthma patients, low- to intermediate-risk chest pain patients, sickle cell disease patients and those with acute decompensated heart failure. In addition, Dr. Hill was involved in several projects examining the role and utility of novel devices designed to detect the presence of cardiac ischemia. He was the co-primary investigator on a multisite Food and Drug Administration approval trial of a magnetocardiography device that has shown promise as a very sensitive adjunct to the EKG in identifying patients with acute coronary syndrome.
Dr. Hill is board certified in American Board Of Emergency Medicine. He is actively involved in clinical research, co-authoring 20 peer reviewed articles.
