
Overview
Randall Brown, MD, PhD is a UW Health addiction medicine specialist and family medicine doctor. He’s also a professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where he directs the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program.Dr. Brown’s specialties include treating and preventing opioid, methamphetamine, alcohol and other substance-use disorders. He also works with patients on the prevention and treatment of issues associated with substance use such as skin and blood-borne infections, liver disease, mental health conditions and injuries.Dr. Brown directs the Center for Addictive Disorders at University Hospital. He assists other doctors in the care of patients who use alcohol and other drugs to improve the health and well-being of these patients and enhance the care that these patients receive from the health care system.In addition to patient care and consulting, Dr. Brown researches ways to prevent and treat addiction. He holds leadership roles in various programs and national associations for addiction medicine and overdose prevention, and advocates for community services and health care to address alcohol- and drug-related concerns. He also studies the potential of novel medications, mobile health and other technological interventions and early liver transplantation to reduce the harms attributable to substance use.In his free time, Dr. Brown enjoys running with his Hungarian Vizsla, cooking, grilling, reading, traveling and spending time with his family.People struggling with addiction don't just need help from specialty treatment organizations.
