I was drawn to psychiatry because mental health affects all aspects of life. Good mental health care can positively affect a patient's entire life trajectory. Mental illness can range from subtle to obvious. It can present in ways that are easy to sympathize with, or in ways that challenge everyone involved. My job is to maintain a compassionate frame no matter what kind of illness I'm treating. My favorite part of my job is the teaching role- helping patients better understand their ailments, and helping improve understanding between them and their loved ones.
