
Overview
Dr. Ray DePaulo is a University Distinguished Service Professor and Co-Director of the Mood Disorder Center in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins Medicine. He has been an active clinician, teacher, and researcher throughout his 46 years with the Hopkins faculty. He founded the Hopkins Affective or Mood Disorders Clinic in 1977 and grew it into a multifaceted program of patient care, teaching and research that is a centerpiece in today’s Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center. Dr. DePaulo’s clinical and research interests focus on clinical assessment and the causes and treatments of bipolar disorders and depression. Under his leadership, the Hopkins Mood Disorders research group led several early genetic studies of bipolar disorder and unipolar depression. He has authored over 180 peer-reviewed scientific articles and mentored outstanding clinicians, scientists and leaders in the research of bipolar disorder and depression. He has partnered with Dr. Kay Jamison in research, education and advocacy efforts for patients and families. and together they founded (2008) and now lead the Hopkins Mood Disorders Center. Dr. DePaulo was the Henry Phipps Professor and Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins Medicine and Psychiatrist in Chief at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 2002 until 2016. From 2016 until 2022 he was the President of the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC.org). Today, Dr. DePaulo remains an active clinician and an enthusiastic teacher and mentor of students, residents, fellows and junior faculty. He serves on many foundation boards and scientific advisory groups related to mood disorders including the Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance and Project Healthy Minds. Dr. DePaulo has authored two books on depressive illnesses for patients and families. He has won several national & international awards for clinical leadership, teaching, and research.

A native of Athens, Greece, Professor Lyketsos graduated from Northwestern University with a BA in Psychology and from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis with a Medical Doctorate. He completed residency and Chief Residency in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins, as well as a fellowship in clinical epidemiology. An active clinician, teacher, and researcher, Dr. Lyketsos is a world expert in the care and treatment of patients with Alzheimer’s and related dementias (ADRD). He carried out pioneering work on the epidemiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric features of AD. His team is developing biomarkers to accelerate treatment development for AD while designing and implementing innovative clinical trials. He leads efforts to ensure the provision of state-of-the-art Dementia Care for people with dementia in the community. Dr. Lyketsos is the Elizabeth Plank Althouse Professor at Johns Hopkins University. He directs the Johns Hopkins Bayview Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, as well as the Richman Family Precision Medicine Center of Excellence in Alzheimer’s Disease and the Memory and Alzheimer’s Treatment Center. He is the recipient of multiple awards including the 2022 Argo Award for Science from the President of the Hellenic Republic. He has authored/co-authored over 450 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, commentaries, as well as five books. His work has been cited over 76,000 times with an h-index of 149. A 2021 Stanford University publication reported that he ranked #13 out of 9,246 scientists worldwide (all-time) in the field of Geriatrics. Castle-Connolly has named Dr. Lyketsos as one of America’s Top Doctors every year since 2001.
