Robert Ian Mccaslin

Overview

As a pediatrician with additional training and certification in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, it is my privilege to care for the wide variety of ill and injured children that present seeking our help at all hours. I enjoy the pace of outpatient medicine, the thrill of the unexpected, the challenge of the diagnostic dilemma, and the joy of walking into an exam room, sitting down, introducing myself, and asking the child and family “now what can we do to help today”? I particularly enjoy working in the academic clinical environment with medical and other students, and physicians in training at all levels, as we work our way through the evaluation and management process. Before every shift I try to remind myself to serve as an effective role model and teacher as they improve upon their craft. Pediatric emergency physicians have an extraordinary opportunity to serve as the “welcoming face” of their institution; I treasure that role and am proud to build upon the strong Duke University Medical Center foundation to improve the health status indicators of the children of our community.

I am a pediatric nephrologist and work with children with kidney disease. Some of the conditions that we see include congenital malformations of the kidney and the bladder, nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the kidney filters), and children who are on dialysis or who received kidney transplantation because of kidney failure. I listen carefully to parents when they bring their children to the clinic because they know their children better than any other person, and they are the best advocates for their child. I collaborate a lot with the other doctors in the clinic. Rest assured, when you visit our clinic and I am not around, the doctor who is seeing you knows everything about your child. This is a group practice with a very caring multidisciplinary team. Dr. Gbadegesin is highly rated in 8 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, Nephrotic Syndrome, Minimal Change Disease, Glomerulonephritis, and Kidney Transplant.

I treat children with cancer and blood disorders, such as anemia and sickle cell disease. When families come in, there is understandably a huge amount of anxiety. I try to spend a lot of time with them and discuss what we know, what we need to find out, and how we plan to care for their children. My goal is to make it the least scary as possible for both the children and the parents/caregivers while providing the best care. Even in the setting of severe illness, interacting with children is uplifting and extremely rewarding. Children truly demonstrate the resilience of the human spirit. What I love most about my job is having relationships with children and seeing them grow; it is a wonderful experience. Dr. Rothman is highly rated in 11 conditions, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency, Anemia, Hemolytic Anemia, Congenital Hemolytic Anemia, and Splenectomy.
