
Overview
Stefan Coombs, M.D., M.B.B.S., is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement. He is experienced in surgical and nonsurgical treatment of injuries to the bones, joints and muscles, as well as various joint replacement approaches. His expertise ranges from minimally invasive muscle sparing surgery, including anterior total hip replacement, to complex revision hip and knee surgery for previous joint replacements that failed. He is passionate about leveraging new technology in robotics and computer navigation to meet patients’ needs. Dr. Coombs obtained his medical degree from the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica, and he went on to perform a surgical internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and an advanced clinical fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at New York University Langone. During his residency, Dr. Coombs received numerous awards for academics and leadership, and he has been involved in medical student training as a mentor for the Orthopaedic Research Society and interest groups. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and served as the academic and administrative chief resident during his final year of residency training. Dr. Coombs enjoys giving back to his communities, with a focus on youth development and mentorship, and he has volunteered on the medical team that performs annual exams for students in Washington public school sports programs. Dr. Coombs’ research interests include patient outcomes after hip and knee replacement, treatment of fractures, and sports-related hip and knee injuries. He has co-authored research publications and made poster and oral presentations on these topics at national meetings. Dr. Coombs is a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
