Overview
Dr. Stephanie L. Smith is the Director of the Program in Global Mental Health Equity at BWH and co-Director of Mental Health at the global non-profit Partners In Health (PIH). She also holds an affiliation with the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS). She works clinically within the Division of Medical Psychiatry at BWH. Dr Smith’s expertise is in program design, implementation and evaluation of mental health services in resource-limited settings. She has supported the development of community-based mental health service delivery platforms, and the establishment of a cross-site learning collaborative in mental health care delivery, across all of PIH’s global sites (Haiti, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mexico, Navajo Nation, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone). In 2020 PIH delivered more than 90,000 facility-based and virtual mental health visits, and cared for more than 32,000 people living with mental health conditions. Dr. Smith’s scholarly contributions focus on innovative models of service delivery, including use of non-specialists to deliver evidence-based mental health care interventions (“task-sharing”), and evaluating the clinical effectiveness of those models. At BWH and HMS, Dr. Smith actively teaches and mentors psychiatry residents and fellows, medical students, and other allied health professionals in the principles of public and global mental health.
