Overview
When it comes to patient care, I feel it is vital to stop and listen to the patient and truly engage with them. I strive to show the patient I care about them as a whole person, not just the problem they present with to the office. Often, the issues that are presented do not have a cure, but lending a listening ear can help the patient feel valued, cared for, and comforted. I have been working in the neurology field prior to coming to Duke. I have experience with general neurology as well as sleep and epilepsy. I am excited to help grow the Comprehensive Center for Epilepsy here at Duke with a specific interest in women with epilepsy. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my French bulldog, Oliver, and my two nieces, as well as hiking, camping, baking, and taking weekend trips to the mountains or beach.

I am a neurologist and cancer doctor who treats brain tumors and researches ways to improve quality of life for brain tumor patients. As a college student, I thought I was going to be a scientist, but fell in love with studying the brain and its inner workings. I am currently the chief of the division of Epilepsy, Sleep, and Clinical Neurophysiology. I see epilepsy patients and patients with sleep disorders. The epilepsy patients that I see often have a hard time controlling their seizures or have other epilepsy-related problems. At Duke, we have many options, including clinical trials, advanced medications, and surgical options, that we can offer patients to get them to a better quality of life with fewer or no seizures. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do.
