He attended Stanford University and returned to the East Coast for medical school at Thomas Jefferson University. During medical school, Dr. Hsieh also obtained a PhD in immunology and afterwards began exploring what would eventually become his long-term interest – the role of bladder inflammation in urinary tract infections and development of bladder cancer. He completed his urology residency training at the University of California San Francisco and pediatric urology fellowship training at Texas Children’s Hospital. As a pediatric urology fellow, Dr. Hsieh began studying how the commensal microbiome (the collection of naturally occurring, non-pathogenic bacteria in and on our bodies) may prevent urinary tract infections. Following fellowship training, he was an Assistant Professor at Stanford University, where he founded an NIH-funded research group focused on bladder inflammation, urinary tract infections and bladder cancer.
